The Man
Behind Best Cellars
The Story of Joshua Wesson
By Jens Strecker
When Joshua Wesson opened the first Best Cellars
store in 1996 in Manhattan, New York his goal was a
consumer-friendly shop that makes buying wine as pleasurable and
exciting as drinking it. He and his store managers are doing
the “hard” work: Searching for the world’s best undiscovered wine
values and out-performers – so the customers can relax and have fun.
And relax they should:
Though best–known as the Co-CEO and Wine Director of
Best Cellars,
Inc., Joshua Wesson enjoyed a long and successful career in the
food and wine industry:
In 1984, Joshua Wesson won the title of Best Sommelier in
America.
Two years later he traveled to Paris to represent America in
international competition where he was named one of the top five
sommeliers of the world.
In late 1986, Mr. Wesson founded “Joshua Wesson/Wine & Food
Associates”, a consulting company whose client list included
well-known companies like American Express, Salomon-Smith Barney’
Morgan Stanley, Citicorp etc…
In 1989, he was nominated for the Who’s Who in American Cooking.
In 1990, Mr. Wesson was elected to the board of the American
Institute of Wine & Food’s New York chapter.
In 1997, Food & Wine magazine named him the Retail Wine Innovator
of the Year for his work in developing Best Cellars.
Joshua Wesson is a leading authority on the pairing of wine and
food. He writes for many national magazines and has appeared on
national television shows like The Today Show, Good Morning America,
CBS Saturday Morning, Martha Stewart Living, CNBC Power Lunch, TV
Food’s Dining Around and the Fox News Channel. In addition he is the
featured wine commentator on National Public Radio’s “The Splendid
Table”.
In case he is not lounging around in New York or in one of the
BC stores he might well be on the hunt for undiscovered value.
The result will be another step toward making beer-oriented America
more a wine drinking nation.
