Robert Mondavi
Turns 90!
By John W. Schultz

California wine icon Robert Mondavi turns 90, Wednesday June 18th 2003.

“At Robert Mondavi we believe wine is the temperate, civilized, sacred, romantic mealtime beverage as recommended in the Bible. Wine has been praised for centuries by statesmen, philosophers, poets and scholars. Wine in moderation is an integral part of our culture, heritage and the good way of life.”

In his 30s and 40s he traveled worldwide promoting California as an emerging winegrowing region.

In his 50s he founded the first new winery in Napa Valley since the repeal of Prohibition, with a vision of making wines from California that belonged among the world's finest.

In his 60s, 70s and 80s his tireless commitment to excellence established Robert Mondavi Winery as an industry leader with its award-winning wines, innovative partnerships with the world's great winemakers, and first-of-its-kind educational program dedicated to sharing the joy of wine, food and the arts.

During the decades Robert has created and assembled the finest portfolio of brands and wineries. Robert Mondavi produces and markets fine wines in several regions of California, and in Italy, Chile and Australia. Fine wines from California include: Robert Mondavi Winery, Robert Mondavi Private Selection, La Famiglia di Robert Mondavi and Colmera, Woodbridge Winery, Byron Vineyards & Winery and Io, Arrowood Vineyards & Winery as well as Opus One produced in partnership with Baroness Philippine de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild of Bordeaux, France. Luce, Lucente and Danzante are produced in Italy in partnership with the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi of Tuscany. Sena, Arboleda and Caliterra are Chilean offerings made in partnership with the Eduardo Chadwick family of Vina Errázuriz in Chile. The company has a minority interest in Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, a famous estate in the Bolgheri appellation of Tuscany, producer of Ornellaia and Masseto. The Robert Mondavi Corporation finalized a 50/50 joint venture with Southcorp to produce and market new Australian and California wines
worldwide.

From the highly acclaimed and limited production Opus One, to Woodbridge which sells millions of cases each year, Robert Mondavi has brought the entire spectrum of quality and value at every price to the wine drinkers of the world.

Now he's turning 90 . . .
Who knows what the next decade will bring?

On June 18th, 2003 Robert Mondavi will celebrate his 90th Birthday among family, friends and fellow-vintners at Robert Mondavi Winery. Be a part of the celebration… send Robert a Birthday card.
