Sangria
Fresca
By Scott Miller
Summer is officially here, and that means long
afternoon parties, barbeques, and evening socials. Like to
offer something refreshing to your guests, perhaps at short
notice? Do you have a long afternoon ahead and don't want to
overdue the alcohol? This simple recipe is perfect for making and
serving on the spot.
One of the things I like best about
Sangria is that you can make it from whatever is on hand, and
with some simple guidelines, it will always turn out good.
Last week, some neighbors came around for a warm evening dinner
outside, and Sangria was a natural choice...but oops! Hadn't
planned on it. So what was in the kitchen? A delightfully
inexpensive bottle of Valle dell'Asso Salento Rosso 2001 ($9.99
for 1.5L) was at hand, citrus fruits, too, and... Fresca!
It's a grapefruit soda, so why not try it? Came up a winner and a
second batch was soon called for.
Sangria Fresca Recipe
1 bottle of inexpensive red wine
2 cans Fresca soda pop
juice of
1/2 fresh squeezed orange
juice of
1/2 fresh squeezed lemon
juice of 1 fresh squeezed lime
a slice or two each of lemon/lime/orange to float in pitcher
ice
If possible, chill liquid ingredients (in fridge or icebox)
beforehand. Put some ice in a pitcher. Pour in your bottle of red.
Add the two cans of Fresca. Cut your citrus fruits in half, and
slice a couple nice thin rounds from each. Drop rounds in pitcher.
Squeeze juice and add to pitcher. Stir, add more ice if room in
pitcher, and
serve over ice. Fruity, refreshing, sweet, and slightly fizzy.. If
you like to dress up the glass, cut some thin rounds from a small
grapefruit to hang on the rim.
