Martin Pugh
UK Correspondent
Writing from Wolverhampton, England, Martin has
a love for a good bottle of wine, and a belief in looking at
alternative markets to find great wine values. Says Martin:
"With the availability of wines becoming greater from further
afield, many surprises can turn up at the local wine
merchants."
Martin observes that it has only been in the last
10 years or so that a certain elitism has been removed from every
day wine drinking: "It has become acceptable for Joe Public
to want to drink more than Leibfraumilch or French mixed red table
wine, and so a market has developed. A greater demand leads to
more pressure to supply better quality, and varied range."
For Martin, it seems only a few years ago that any affordable
wines were either: "Europe’s dregs or the New World's
revenge for some alleged thing our ancestors did to their
ancestors..." But, in the quintessential WineSquire tradition,
Martin continues: "All I want is good wine at reasonable
prices. So, you show me your finds and I’ll show you mine, and
who knows what might appear locally if requests are made of our
suppliers."
