Washington State Wine Industry Employment Page
Distributors, also called wholesalers are in
the business of buying large quantities of wine from a variety of
Producers, Suppliers, and Importers, and then selling small
quantities of a wide variety of products to retailers, grocery
stores, and restaurants etc. This is called the three-tier system.
The system is mandatory for most alcoholic
beverage sales in the state of Washington. The exception is the
Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB)
which acts as a Distributor and a Retailer in many cases. Most
wine wholesalers in Washington generally have a large portfolio of
wine brands usually between 20-100, some sell beer, and
non-alcoholic brands as well. Job opportunities in the wine
industry can be found in each of the tiers.
Wineries, Distributors and
Retailers make up the majority of
the jobs, with importers and other suppliers making an important
component on the more lucrative side of the business.
