Each of the new Maryhill wines has a unique and wonderful story;
however, the new “Fort Rock Red” Columbia Valley Red Table Wine truly
captures the essence of Maryhill as well as the rich history of the
surrounding region. As the next wine in Maryhill’s “Explorer Series,”
Fort Rock Red follows the hugely popular Rediviva Red blend named for
Robert Gray’s ship The Columbia Rediviva.
Fort Rock is the historical camp site where “The Corps of Discovery”
better known as the Lewis & Clark Expedition stayed to dry out after
braving the raging rapids of Celilo Falls located near present day The
Dalles, Oregon. Amazingly, the expedition made it through the torrents
on the then free-flowing Columbia River with little damage and stayed at
Fort Rock Camp to make repairs, restock supplies and catalog celestial
observations.
The packaging for Fort Rock Red is all new, featuring an image taken
from a painting by Robert Thomas which is part of the The Dalles Mural
Society. The image shows Meriwhether Lewis, William Clark and a Native
American guide peering out over the Gorge from Fort Rock Camp.
Maryhill’s Fort Rock Red is a wonderfully balanced and ready to drink
blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 17% Syrah and 3% Cabernet
Franc.
Fans of Maryhill’s flagship varietal Zinfandel will be glad to know
there’s plenty of 2001 Zinfandel available, at least there’s plenty
available right now… Judging from the depth and character this vintage
holds, this robust and inky wine has all the potential to surpass the
highly acclaimed 2000 Zinfandel. Last year’s vintage took “Best of
Class”, “Gold Medal” and runner-up to “Best of Show” honors at the 2002
West Coast Wine Competition beating out more than 100 California
Zinfandels in its price range. |
